Elizabeth “Eliza” Hocking and her sister, Ellen Wilkes, decided to come to America aboard Titanic to find a better life. Eliza and her family members travelled in second class, while her sister Ellen purchased a third class ticket. All were headed to Akron, Ohio. As Titanic began sinking Eliza and all of her party except her son, George, got into lifeboat number four and were rescued by the Carpathia. George perished in the disaster. Ellen Wilkes boarded lifeboat number sixteen and was also saved. Both women lived in Akron for the rest of their lives. |
